Manila, 29 October 2022 (dpa/MIA) – The death toll caused by tropical storm Nalgae in the Philippines has risen to 45, with more than 184,000 people affected, the national disaster agency said Saturday. The agency initially said the death toll had risen to 72, but due to “overcounting” revised it to 45. At least 18 people were missing in floods and landslides, while 33 were injured, the agency added. Forty of those killed were from Maguindanao province in the southern region of Mindanao, where days of heavy rains triggered floods and landslides, burying homes in mud and debris. Three victims were also killed in the nearby provinces of Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato, while two people were reported dead in the Western Visayas region, north of Mindanao, the agency said. Nalgae made landfall in the eastern province of Camarines Sur, before crossing the main island of Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometres per hour (km/h) and gusts of up to 160 km/h, the weather bureau said. The storm was moving west-northwest at 30 km/h, the bureau said. Authorities raised storm warnings in more than 40 provinces, as well as the capital region of Metro Manila. Dozens of domestic flights have been cancelled, while sea travel was suspended in most parts of the country, leaving thousands stranded ahead of All Saint’s Day, locally called Undas, the traditional day for Filipinos to visit the graves of their dead relatives. The Philippine archipelago is hit by an average of 20 tropical cyclones each year.
