Kiev, 11 October 2022 (dpa/MIA) - The death toll from a series of Russian strikes across Ukraine has risen to 19, authorities said, as G7 leaders prepared to hold urgent talks by video link to discuss the West's commitments to Ukraine. More than 100 people were injured as a result of the wave of strikes that hit numerous cities, including Kiev, on Monday, the Ukrainian civil defence authorities said on Tuesday. The death toll had earlier stood at 14. In addition to the Ukrainian capital, 12 areas of the country were affected by the Russian attacks. Many of the dozens of missiles fired hit civilian infrastructure, especially energy facilities. International condemnation was swift, with world leaders using words such as "terrorism" and "war crimes," while the G7 quickly announced it would gather by video link. About 300 localities are still without electricity as a result of the bombardments, the authorities said. At one point, more than 3,500 communities were in the dark. Hundreds of emergency workers have fanned out across the country to clean up from the aftermath of the Russian attacks. US President Joe Biden and the other leaders of the G7 group will hold a virtual meeting on Tuesday to discuss their "unwavering commitment to support Ukraine," the White House said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will join at the start of the closed meeting, scheduled to begin at 1200 GMT. In a statement, the White House said the leaders would discuss holding Russian President Vladimir Putin "accountable in the face of Russia's aggression and atrocities."
