Death toll from Israeli attack on Beirut rises to 31

Beirut, 21 September 2024 (dpa/MIA) - The death toll from the Israeli attack on Beirut's southern suburbs, a hotbed of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah movement, has risen to 31, authorities said on Saturday.

Among the dead were three children and seven women, Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad said in a press conference.

At least 68 people were injured in Friday's strike, the minister said.

Earlier, the ministry reported that at least 14 people were killed.

Hezbollah has reported the deaths of 15 of its members so far following the Israeli attack, including high-ranking military official Ibrahim Akil and other commanders.

Akil was one of the founding members of Hezbollah and the group's elite Radwan Force.

Meanwhile, the number of fatalities from the coordinated blasts involving electronic devices in Lebanon earlier this week has risen from 37 to 39, the Health Ministry said.

Some 3,000 people were injured in the detonations, which have also been widely attributed to Israel.
