Day of mourning announced in Belgium after ‘catastrophic’ floods
Brussels, 16 July 2021 (dpa/MIA) – Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has declared Tuesday to be a national day of mourning for the victims of flooding and extreme weather. Belgium was still waiting for the final total of fatalities, De Croo said at a press conference on Friday but the floods already appeared to be “the most catastrophic our country has ever seen.” Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden noted Friday that some 200 rescue workers and material aid from France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy and Austria had been sent to assist Belgian rescue workers. Some 112 communities were affected by the floods, she said, with thousands of people needing to be evacuated. Even more people had seen their property damaged.
