Damages in several villages under repair after heavy rain and flooding hits parts of North Macedonia
Skopje, 23 August 2022 (MIA) - The heavy rain that fell on Monday in Vinica, Dolneni and Tetovo caused damages, which are currently under repair. Over 60 buildings in the urban area of Vinica have been flooded, and the water from residential buildings has almost been fully pumped out. Everything is expected to be done by the end of the day should no new rainfalls occur, the Crisis Management Center (CMC) told MIA on Tuesday.  Firefighting teams were on the ground until 11 pm last night and intervened 20 times, mostly in schools and business facilities. Damages have been repaired in most cases. "The mayor has notified that damage reports have begun, as well as quick interventions by the Damage Assessment Committee, and the Municipal Crisis HQ is to hold a meeting," the CMC said. Lazhani Village in Dolneni was flooded due to the downpour on Monday. CMC said that the affected part of the village is the one with the tertiary canal going through it, which has been tightened due to various reasons. The power has been cut in Lazhani and some of its residents have been evacuated. Over 30 buildings have been flooded and they're still being cleaned up. CMC said that everything will be under control during the day should no new rainfalls occur. The residents of Lazhani said things have started to go back to normal. Heavy rainfall affected Tetovo and Mala Rechica as well. Dozens of people have been evacuated, according to the CMC, who have been placed in safe locations until the water from their houses gets pumped out. The CMC said there were issues with Gjermo Village early on Tuesday morning at 2:30 a.m., where a house wall was destroyed in the mountain area, and some cars have been blocked off. The residents demand that the authorities take measures as soon as possible. Teams from the municipalities, the CMC, the Protection and Rescue Directorate, firefighters, and the Tetovo police station are on the ground, working with construction mechanization. dk/nn/
