Skopje, 8 August 2023 (MIA) - The Customs Administration has seized 184 bonds worth USD 92 million, found in a bag of a Turkish national who arrived on a flight from Istanbul, said director Stefan Bogoev on Tuesday.
The bonds have been seized through a decision of the Basic Court in Skopje and will be handed over to the Agency for Management of Confiscated Property.
"On July 28, customs officers at the Skopje-based airport seized 184 bonds each worth USD 500,000 or totaling at USD 92 million. The bonds were in the possession of a Turkish national arriving with a regular flight from Istanbul, who said he had nothing to declare. Upon a detailed check, four folders were found in a black bag. Interviews have been carried out, additional evidence has been collected, and national and international institutions, including Interpol and Selec, have been consulted," Bogoev told a press conference.
In line with the Law on the Customs Administration and the Law on Misdemeanors, the Customs Administration filed a charge before the court.
"Upon completion of the judicial procedure, the Skopje Basic Court ruled for confiscation of the bonds, whereas the person was fined in accordance with the Law on Foreign Currency Operations. The bonds have been confiscated and will be handed over to the Agency for Management of Confiscated Property. The Customs Administration will open a financial investigation in cooperation with all relevant national and international authorities over attempted fraud and prevention of money laundering," said Bogoev.
He added that the Customs Administration remained committed to the fight against crime and prevention of illicit trade.
