Court orders precautionary measures for Ixhet Memeti

Skopje, 23 May 2024 (MIA) - The Basic Criminal Court in Skopje ordered precautionary measures for Ixhet Memeti, the second suspect in the investigation related to the crime of “accepting a reward for unlawful influence” involving Supreme Court judge Nake Georgiev as the first suspect.

The suspect, according to the court decision, is obliged to regularly report to court authorities and his travel document has been confiscated.

In a media statement on Thursday, suspect Memeti said it is in everyone’s interest for the procedure to be concluded as soon as possible.

“It’s in my interest and in the interest of the public for the institutions to do their job as soon as possible. This strikes me as a man, however, it’s not good to discuss a court process in front of the media. I assure you it will be concluded swiftly, and it will be revealed that I haven’t done anything illegal,” Memeti said.

Previously, the Basic Criminal Court ordered a 30-day detention for Supreme Court judge Nake Georgiev over suspicions that he might obstruct the criminal procedure by influencing witnesses, as well as circumstances which point to the possibility he might finish or repeat the criminal offense.

Georgiev and Memeti are suspects in an investigation launched by the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office for Prosecuting Organized Crime and Corruption. They are suspected of “accepting a reward for unlawful influence”.

The probe was launched after an action from the Interior Ministry following a report from the son of a suspect in a separate case led at the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office for Prosecuting Organized Crime and Corruption.
