Skopje, 28 November 2024 (MIA) - We have never been closer to the European Union, we just need to make one more step, which, I believe is a painless step even though it is being portrayed as a great blow to the Macedonian people, and that is the inclusion of the six communities to the preamble of the Constitution, former Prime Minister Ljubcho Georgievski said at an event Thursday.

“A lot of drama is being created over something that neither denies Macedonia as a country, nor denies the Macedonian identity nor will anything dramatic happen with the inclusion of the six communities in the Constitution,” Georgievski said.

The former Prime Minister said the new Government is changing the country’s strategic orientation, which, he said, can be seen with the Hungarian loan and the friendship with Hungary and Serbia.

“With the new Government, Macedonia is evidently changing its strategic orientation, and I believe that the loan that was taken out [from Hungary] and the great friendship that is being demonstrated, not only with Hungary, but also with Serbia, shows this,” Georgievski said.

Georgievski asked what the country would lose if it were to adopt the constitutional changes and move forward in its EU accession.

“When we are witnessing a vocabulary with a high level of pathos in defense of Macedonia, the Macedonian identity, we can’t help but wonder what Macedonia would lose if we were to finally solve this issue a month from now and move forward with the negotiations with the European Union. The whole act of making this an issue, which really isn’t an issue based on the philosophy of the Macedonian state, from the Ilinden uprising, ASNOM, the first Constitution, and up until today, when we are open to minorities and communities, for me this is really difficult to grasp. I believe this Government is demonstrating a narrative that is unlike any other Government in the Republic of Macedonia, a complete lack of ideas about the path to the European accession,” Georgievski stressed.
