Council of City of Skopje convened at emergency session for crisis-hit public transportation

Council of City of Skopje convened at emergency session for crisis-hit public transportation

Skopje, 21 November 2024 (MIA) – Chair of the Council of the City of Skopje, Trajko Slaveski, convened an emergency session, due at 6 pm, in which municipal councillors should discuss the capital’s public transportation, which is facing disruption due to lack of fuel.

Since Wednesday afternoon, only 25 Public Transport Enterprise (JSP) buses are operating, while the rest remained parked in JSP’s garages.

“The non-functioning of public enterprises under the City of Skopje’s jurisdiction, which are tasked with providing vital services for the citizens, has reached its peak… The Council is prepared through constructive debate to adopt conclusions urging those in charge, primarily Mayor Arsovska and the directors, to normalize Skopje public transportation urgently,” Slaveski wrote in social media posts.

The opposition party SDSM also called for urgent session over the lack of public transportation in the city. Party leader Venko Filipche in a statement raised concern over the situation in Skopje saying the capital is in crisis.

“If this attempt for joint action were to be hindered, we would reconsider our participation in the Council, because we won’t serve as a cover for the bad policies destroying our city,” said Filipche.
