Cost of living up, unions hope retailers keep margins capped

Cost of living up, unions hope retailers keep margins capped

Skopje, 24 September 2024 (MIA) — The average family of four in North Macedonia needed 61,306 denars to meet the minimum cost of living in September 2024, which was 107 denars more than in August, according to the Federation of Trade Unions of Macedonia.

"What is concerning is that food and beverage costs in September, which are 23,034 denars, have increased by 717 denars compared to August (22,317 denars). This shows that retailers over the past month, ahead of the announced margin caps, raised prices of basic food products before the government's decision came into force," unionists said.

They also said the largest chunk (86%) of the food and beverages factored into their estimate of the minimum monthly expenses for a household was identical to the products the government has capped the margins of. If the governmental decision is honored by retail stores, they added, food and beverage costs should fall, especially for vulnerable citizens and low-paid workers. mr/
