Constitutional amendments to change election of head of state are unacceptable, says Dimitrievski

Skopje, 15 April 2024 (MIA) – Presidential candidate Maksim Dimitrievski, the leader of the Movement ZNAM – For Our Macedonia, said Monday any possible proposals for constitutional changes regarding the election of a head of state in Parliament or for removal of the phrase “language spoken by 20 percent” are unacceptable.

According to him, the possible removal of the phase undermines the foundation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement.

“Any constitutional changes involving the election of a president in Parliament instead of in direct elections for me, a candidate running for president of the ZNAM movement, are unacceptable,” Dimitrievski told a news conference in Skopje.

Referring to the coalition European Front, he said it has “a mono-ethnic policy aimed at transforming Macedonia from a simple to a complex type of state.”

Dimitrievski said his program, entitled “Manifest for Macedonia” includes five main principles. “One of the key principles is that in the first 100 days in office I will advocate for the creation of a state strategy to combat corruption and organized crime… Once we eradicate corruption, we can start tackling other issues with the final goal being sustainable Macedonia,” he said.

The presidential candidate stressed that the EU accession process should continue and Macedonians should join the organization “with their heads held high.”
