Consecration of first Macedonian Orthodox church in Croatia

Skopje, 31 May 2023 (MIA) - The first Macedonian Orthodox church in Croatia, "St. Zlata of Meglen", was consecrated in Zagreb on Saturday. At a ceremony after the consecration, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković received on behalf of the Government the highest decoration of the Macedonian Orthodox Church – Ohrid Archbishopric (MOC – OA), as a mark of gratitude and sincere friendship, Croatian media outlets report.

The highest decoration of the MOC-OA, the Order of St. Clement of Ohrid, was also awarded to the Croatian Bishops' Conference (HBK) for its hospitality and fraternal support and assistance, and was received by the Secretary General of the Croatian Bishops' Conference, Rev. Krunoslav Novak.

Head of the Macedonian Orthodox Church – Ohrid Archbishopric (MOC – OA), H. H. Stefan, awarded the decorations alongside Metropolitan Pimen of Europe and Metropolitan of Tetovo and Gostivar Josif.

The delegation of the country was led by Macedonian Ambassador to Croatia, Milaim Fetai, who extended gratitude to Croatia for the support in the construction of the church.

Croatian PM Plenković expressed satisfaction with attending a "great celebration of a truly historical character for the Macedonian minority in Croatia."

"I am truly honored, but above all I see this as a tribute to the entire government and the many people who supported wholeheartedly, with understanding, respect, openness and sincere engagement, the Macedonians in Croatia, as well as all national minorities, because it is good for our societies, for the culture of inclusiveness and especially for the position of Croats in all neighboring countries," said Plenković.

The first Macedonian Orthodox church in Croatia was registered in 1993, and in 1995 the Zagreb Archdiocese gave temporary use of the church of St. Roch in Zagreb, while the construction of the church "St. Zlata of Meglen" started nine years ago.
