City of Skopje not to turn off street lights
Skopje, 23 August 2022 (MIA) - Under no circumstances will the City of Skopje turn off street lights, said Mayor Danela Arsovska at a press conference held Tuesday, adding that this is for the safety and security of the citizens.
"We will do all in our power to reduce energy costs, but not at the citizens' expense and not by threatening the safety of the city streets and boulevards," Arsovska said in response to a reporter’s question about energy saving measures and recommendations.
The measures and recommendations, Arsovska pointed out, will be submitted to the public enterprises and institutions by the end of the day, after which they will also be published.
"We started a process to reduce LED intensity of street lights to 70% to save power. Lighting systems will be adapted to certain time intervals, according to need during the day, and we're slowly making the switch to LED lights that use 85% less power than regular lights," Arsovska said, adding that they've issued guidelines concerning the limitation of light that's not considered essential, such as limiting illumination on public buildings and ads.
"We've issued guidelines for rational device usage in facilities, and we're significantly cutting unproductive spending," Arsovska said.
Each municipality, Arsovska points out, creates its own saving measures because they can make autonomous decisions, whereas the City of Skopje brought only short-term and long-term measures meant to contribute to the preservation of energy and transitioning towards renewable energy sources. dk/nn/
