City of Skopje and UNDP sign memorandum on sustainable and long-term development

Skopje, 21 January 2026 (MIA) – The Mayor of the City of Skopje, Orce Gjorgjievski, and the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Armen Grigoryan signed Wednesday a memorandum on cooperation.

Gjorgjievski said the signing of the memorandum establishes a clear framework for strategic and long-term cooperation in key areas for the development of Skopje with the goal of advancing local policies, strengthening institutional capacities, and the implementation of modern and sustainable solutions in the interest of the citizens.

The Mayor said the UNDP partnership represents a significant step in enhancing the city's cooperation with one of the most relevant international organizations in sustainable development, stressing that the City of Skopje highly values the UNDP’s long-standing support and commitment.

The memorandum foresees cooperation in several strategic areas, including improving property and communal tax systems, advancing urban planning and environmental protection, accelerating the digital transformation, encouraging local economic development, as well as the planning of quality projects for European and international funds.

A special emphasis has been placed on assistance for the realization of the Skopje – European Capital of Culture 2028 project which is seen as a significant opportunity for long-term transformation of the city and its improved positioning on the culture map of Europe.

According to the Mayor, with the partnership the City of Skopje is reaffirming its commitment to developing as a sustainable, modern, and European city.
