Chief prosecutor, anti-corruption commission chair agree to cooperate on monitoring upcoming elections

Skopje, 13 March 2024 (MIA) — Chief Public Prosecutor Ljupcho Kocevski and a group of public prosecutors met with State Commission for the Prevention of Corruption chair Tatjana Dimitrovska and several members to discuss ways of improving cooperation between the two institutions.

This includes cooperating in monitoring the upcoming election process in line with the competences of the prosecution and the corruption watchdog, according to a press release from the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Meeting participants also agreed to review and suggest improvements to the Memorandum of Cooperation between the two institutions; to hold more frequent meetings; and to coordinate in handling cases so as to avoid duplication as well as violations of the confidentiality of proceedings and the presumption of innocence.

They also discussed the impact of the latest amendments to the Criminal Code to the work of the two institutions, the release says.

It adds that the PPO has received 58 motions filed by the anticorruption commission between 2019 and 2024, out of which 12 in 2022, 29 in 2003, and two in 2024.

All older cases, except for one, were already closed and the PPO was taking action on some of the newer ones, the release adds. mr/
