Charles III formally proclaimed new king after queen's death
King Charles III was formally proclaimed Britain's new sovereign on Saturday during a meeting of the so-called Accession Council. Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday at her Scottish residence of Balmoral Castle, at the age of 96. Charles automatically became king upon the death of his mother, but was formally announced in the role on Saturday in a ceremony televised for the first time.
