Athens, 8 August 2023 (dpa/MIA) - European football ruling body UEFA has postponed the Champions League qualifying round game between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb after a Greek fan died in violent clashes between supporters.
The first leg of the third qualifying round was originally to take place on Tuesday evening in Athens, but will be rescheduled for August 18 or August 19, UEFA said.
"UEFA deplores in the strongest possible terms the appalling incidents that took place in Athens last night and resulted in the loss of a life," the federation said.
UEFA president Gianni Infantino wrote on Instagram: "There is absolutely no place for violence in football, on or off the field, or in society. Alongside everyone at (football governing body FIFA), I stand with all those affected by this tragic incident and call on the relevant authorities to ensure appropriate action is taken."
On Monday evening, a man was killed in Athens after being stabbed several times, according to the police. Several Dinamo Zagreb fans travelled to Greece even though away supporters were not to be allowed into the stadium.
According to media reports, clashes broke out outside AEK's football pitch after the visiting team's training session ended and the team had left the stadium.
"While expressing our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim, to AEK Athens FC and its fans, we would like to reiterate that violence has no place in our sport and we expect that those responsible for this terrible act be arrested and consigned to justice in the shortest delay," UEFA said.
The game in Zagreb will be played on August 15 as planned and the previous decision regarding no away supporters for both matches is maintained.
