Bytyqi-Gabriel: Construction of Corridor VIII railway of crucial importance for country and region

Skopje, 8 May 2023 (MIA) – Deputy PM for Economic Affairs Fatmir Bytyqi met on Monday with Björn Gabriel, European Investment Bank (EIB) Representative to the Republic of North Macedonia.

Bytyqi underscored the importance of the construction of the Corridor VIII railway as very significant for our economy, but also for the countries of the region, highlighting the completion of the project in terms of finances.

Bytyqi and Gabriel reviewed the current preparations for the continuation of the investment and advisory support that the EIB provides to North Macedonia, but also for the additional programme for investments and technical assistance of €100 million for Macedonian small and medium-sized enterprises, which is in the initial phase and can be immediately activated once approved by the Parliament, the government said in a press release.

Gabriel briefed Bytyqi about the preparations for the railway corridor VIII-Eastern Section project, which are now entering the final phase.

During the meeting, Bytyqi and Gabriel underscored that the cooperation between the EIB and the Government of North Macedonia is beneficial for the development of the country, because as a long-standing partner, the EIB has invested €1.1 billion to support the development of vital infrastructure and help ensure energy security.
