Bytyqi: Pressure from traders pushing producers to increase prices
- The final analyses are underway, what we know and are already identifying is that the prices of the dairy products are not raised by the producers, but they are actually being pushed into increasing prices by a certain percentage due to pressure from traders. Once we acquire all information, we will act appropriately, whether by capping prices or other measures – everything that is legally possible will be done, said Deputy Prime Minister in charge of economic affairs, Fatmir Bytyqi, at a press conference Friday.

Skopje, 25 August 2023 (MIA) – The final analyses are underway, what we know and are already identifying is that the prices of the dairy products are not raised by the producers, but they are actually being pushed into increasing prices by a certain percentage due to pressure from traders. Once we acquire all information, we will act appropriately, whether by capping prices or other measures – everything that is legally possible will be done, said Deputy Prime Minister in charge of economic affairs, Fatmir Bytyqi, at a press conference Friday.
In answer to media questions over the price hikes of certain food products, Bytyqi said that some supermarket chains are acting unfairly and unethically, without mentioning specific names. He reiterated that the Government will not tolerate anyone who makes decisions which harm the citizens.
“The good practices in trade are not being practiced in our country. Fairly easily, with a few questions, you can note the unethical and unfair behavior that some supermarket chains practice. Currently, I wouldn’t like to name names, once we get them they will be named. I can’t remain silent in the face of unfair practices in trade, especially practices that harm the citizens and me, As long as I hold this position I won’t remain silent, and the practices they practice I think should be left for another time,” said Bytyqi.
Over increases in the price of bread, the Deputy PM said the producers already came out with a statement.
“A certain association from the economic chambers said that the announced price hikes are speculation, that there are no conditions for increases in the prices of basic food products, because all parameters show that there is a drop in [the prices of] raw materials for food products. I will reiterate my position, and the position of the ministers of economy, finance and agriculture – there will be no tolerance for any decisions that harm the citizens,” stressed Bytyqi.
