Bulgarian MFA closely follows Macedonian opposition’s views against Bulgarian clubs
Sofia, 18 November 2022 (MIA) – The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry closely follows “how the opposition in the Republic of North Macedonia is fanning the campaign against the Bulgarian clubs there, instrumentalizing it for domestic purposes”, said Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister Kostadin Kodzhabashev.   According to Kodzhabashev, such conduct benefits only factors or third parties interested in hindering North Macedonia’s EU integration, MIA’s Sofia correspondent reports.   Kodzhabashev commented on the amendments to the Law on Associations and Foundations and the Law on Political Parties in North Macedonia, noting that authorities in Sofia are concerned that such amendments might restrict the right of association.    He pointed out that a new commission on the use of names of historical figures was set up, adding that legitimate questions arose, such as who will exercise control over the commission's opinions, will its decisions be appealable, and what criteria it will apply.   Kodzhabashev also said it remains to be seen whether the government in Skopje will send the Law on Associations and Foundations to the Venice Commission for an opinion.   "Bulgaria believes, however, that if human rights were approached with due care and attention, such an important draft law should have been sent for an opinion in advance, as now the law is actually starting to be implemented," he added.
