Sofia, 19 January 2022 (MIA) — Former Bulgarian Prime Minister and leader of the country's main opposition party, Boyko Borisov, said Bulgaria and North Macedonia needed to settle historical issues through revising their textbooks, signs and monument inscriptions before moving forward. According to MIA’s Sofia correspondent, Borissov recalled the efforts made by Bulgaria from the time of President Zhelyu Zhelev to the signing of the Friendship Treaty in 2017, supported by all political parties in Bulgaria. The agreement, he said, listed the requirements that needed to be met. He said he found out only yesterday "that the Republic of North Macedonia will not have any territorial claims to Bulgaria." "For so many years no Macedonian politician has allowed himself to say such a thing to me – that they are giving up any territorial claims to Bulgaria," the former Bulgarian PM said. He also highlighted that Bulgaria had been the first to recognize the country’s independence and the first to support its NATO membership as well as that his country wanted North Macedonia to join the EU. mr/
