Biggest challenge for Macedonian Stock Exchange is lack of foreign investors, says CEO

Skopje, 3 May 2023 (MIA) - The biggest challenge for the Macedonian Stock Exchange (MSE) is the lack of foreign portfolio investors, and this can be overcome through improved promotion of the Macedonian capital market. Representatives of Croatian brokerage houses, banks, investment and pension funds are in Skopje on Wednesday to receive detailed information on the Macedonian capital market and find interest and opportunities for investments.

MSE Chief Executive Officer Ivan Shteriev said it is good that the basic generator of the Macedonian capital market are the country's investors, while noting the need for foreign investors that would bring in new practices at the stock exchange.

"Getting more information about the two markets must be raised at a higher level because foreign portfolio investors must get acquainted with our products and infrastructure if we want to see more of them here. We have had a few good years but the basic generator on the market are Macedonian investors and individuals. This is good and desired but not the ideal structure. We would like to see more foreign investors that will bring in more turnover and new practices," said Shteriev ahead of event "Days of Macedonian Capital Market" in Skopje.

Zagreb Stock Exchange board chairwoman Ivana Gažić said regional consolidation is very important.

"We own 100 percent of the Slovenian Stock Exchange and now 30 percent of the MSE. We believe the key to success is sharing experiences and knowledge, bringing our markets closer to local investors. Croatia has a very significant base of investors and our goal is to promote Macedonian companies and the economy," said Gažić.

Today's event brings together representatives of Macedonian and Croatian brokerage companies and banks, investment and pension funds, listed companies, regulators, depositories and other market stakeholders.
