Berlin agrees to allow Poland to deliver MiG-29 jets to Ukraine

The German government has given Poland its approval for the delivery of five Soviet-designed MiG-29 fighter jets from old East German stocks to Ukraine, the Ministry of Defence in Berlin said on Thursday.

An application received in Berlin only on Thursday was approved within a few hours.

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius welcomed the decision in a statement: "This shows Germany can be relied on!"

The aircraft in question were given to Poland by Germany in 2003. The Bundeswehr had taken them over from former stocks of East Germany's National People's Army (NVA).
