Bayern Munich-Union Berlin game cancelled because of heavy snow

Munich/Berlin, 2 December 2023 (dpa/MIA) - The Bundesliga home game between German football champions Bayern Munich and Union Berlin has been cancelled due to the heavy snowfall and associated safety risks, Union Berlin and the Munich transport authority said on Saturday morning.

Due to safety risks for all involved, it was decided not to go ahead with the match, which had been due to start at 3:30 pm (1430 GMT), they said.

Due to the heated pitch in Munich's Allianz Arena, the main concern was not the playability of the pitch, but the safety and above all the journey of the spectators, some of whom were travelling to Munich from further afield.

Snow and ice had caused traffic chaos in the south of Germany on Saturday morning. Flight operations at Munich Airport were temporarily suspended until 12 noon due to heavy snowfall, according to a spokesman on Saturday morning. So far, around 320 of the 760 flights planned for the day have been cancelled.

Numerous railway lines around the state capital of Munich had to be closed during the night, according to rail operator Deutsche Bahn (DB). Train services to and from Munich's main railway station were temporarily suspended. Passengers in Ulm and Munich had to spend the night in trains.
