Balkan lynx photographed at Galichica National Park

Balkan lynx photographed at Galichica National Park
Ohrid, 22 October 2021 (MIA) – A young Balkan lynx, currently considered an endangered species, was photographed by the specially placed cameras meant to monitor roe activity at Galichica National Park. The photo of the lynx was quite clear and vivid. Lynxes are becoming a more and more rare sighting in Macedonian forests. Andon Bojadzi, head of the Nature Preservation Department at Galichica national enterprise, says that the special sensor cameras have taken multiple photos of lynxes in numerous locations over the past 18 months, but that this data is insufficient to determine their population and numbers. It’s difficult to identify a lynx through photos, because lynxes are recognized through their fur patterns, and low-quality photos make identification almost impossible. Efforts are made to estimate the population of the Balkan lynx according to the number of roes as well, which are part of its diet. “We need this information to get a rough idea of the number of lynxes there are at Galichica NP, and to judge the condition of their prey. Then, after analyzing the conditions in their habitat, we can appropriately plan measures and activities to support the Balkan lynx population,” Bojadzi says. dk/ba/
