Skopje, 6 June 2022 (MIA) - Head of Delegation of the European Union, Ambassador David Geer will visit Prilep on Monday to hand over the award for Greenest Municipality to Borče Jovčeski, Mayor of Prilep.
The Delegation of the European Union launched the award for Greenest Municipality in the context of its campaign to raise awareness of and promote the EU Green Deal. Under the open call, launched on 3 March 2022 on the occasion of the World Wildlife Day, all municipalities of North Macedonia were invited to apply by showcasing their best examples of solid waste management in 2021. Eight municipalities: Berovo, Centar (Skopje), Kavadarci, Ohrid, Pehčevo, Prilep, Tetovo and Zelenikovo participated in the call by presenting their flagship activities with which they contributed towards better environment in 2021.
The evaluation committee, composed of experts from the EU Delegation, Go Green, Eko-svest and a representative of Europe House shortlisted Kavadarci and Prilep for subsequent field inspections to verify the information presented in their applications.
The evaluation committee recognised Prilep as the municipality that best showcased environmental practice in the area of waste management in 2021. The decision is being announced today on 05 June 2022 on the occasion of the World Environment Day. Ambassador David Geer will have the honour to present the 2021 Greenest Municipality award to Mayor Jovčeski on 06 June 2022 in Prilep, the EU Delegation in Skopje said in a press release.
The handover of the award will take place in the framework of the conference “Best practice of municipal waste management – because there is no planet B” organised under the EU for Municipalities project funded by the European Union. The event will take place at Prilep City Park (stone wall) at 11:00 hrs and will initiate cooperation at municipal (incl. cross-border) level in waste management and recycling.
The ‘EU with YOU’ visit to Prilep will also include a visit to the Waste Water Treatment Plant – an EU-investment worth €8 million that improves quality of water as well as quality of life of Prilep citizens since 2019. Later on, Ambassador Geer and Mayor Jovčeski will visit Prilep Lake, whose status as sport and recreational complex that is embedded with nature was improved with EU support worth €0,47 million.
Ambassador Geer will network with the civil society organisations from Prilep to discuss issues related to young people, Roma empowerment and better cycling infrastructure.
