Athens prepares evacuation operation in Sudan

Greece is transferring special units of its military and aircraft to Egypt for an evacuation operation in embattled Sudan, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias announced on state television.

Egypt had agreed to the operation, he said, adding that it will be closely coordinated with other countries and international organizations.

There are about 150 people with Greek citizenship in Sudan who have expressed the wish to leave the country. It was unknown on Sunday when the evacuation operation would start. Special forces from Greece are to operate from a base in southern Egypt, Greek media further reported.

Sudan's de facto president and commander-in-chief of the army, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, agreed to the evacuation of citizens of other states and diplomatic representatives on Saturday. The US has already withdrawn its government employees from the north-east African country. The army is fighting for power in Sudan against the once allied paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) unit.
