At least eight killed in roof collapse at Novi Sad railway station

Novi Sad, 1 November 2024 (MIA) - Eight people were killed when the concrete roof above the entrance of the railway station in Novi Sad collapsed on Friday, according to a statement from Serbia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Ivica Dačić.

Novi Sad’s Mayor, Milan Đurić, confirmed that more than 30 people were injured. According to Serbian media, there were benches under the concrete roof, and at the time of the collapse, many people were seated on them.

“This is one of the darkest days in the history of Novi Sad. This is a devastating tragedy. I want to offer my condolences to the families of the victims on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Serbia and everyone here. I thank all the workers who are helping and fighting to rescue the people trapped under the debris,” said Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević.

“We will insist on identifying those responsible,” added Vučević.

“This is an extremely hard operation that will last for several hours. Eight bodies have been retrieved from the debris. Two survivors are in the hospital, one of whom is in critical condition. We are in communication with two people who are still under the rubble,” Dačić said.
