At least 10 people killed in bus accident in Australia

Sydney, 12 June 2023 (dpa/MIA) - At least 10 people died and dozens were injured after a bus overturned in Australia late on Sunday, police said on Monday.

Police said the bus, reportedly carrying wedding guests, rolled about 11:30 pm (1330 GMT) in the small town of Greta, in the Hunter region of New South Wales.

The driver of the bus – a 58-year-old man – was taken to hospital under police guard for mandatory testing and assessment.

Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman told a press conference the driver was arrested after his release from hospital.

"He's been the driver of a motor vehicle collision where there have been fatal injuries and there will be charges pending."

Crash investigators and forensic police were investigating the accident, Chapman said. It was too early to say what charges the driver may face, she added.

Chapman said 25 people were injured and taken to hospital after the accident.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese thanked emergency workers who rushed to the scene.

"For a day of joy to end in such devastating loss is cruel indeed," he tweeted.

He sent his "deepest sympathies to the loved ones of those killed in this horrific bus tragedy" while acknowledging those injured in the accident.
