Skopje, 25 April 2024 (MIA) – Macedonian art historian and cultural manager Iskra Geshoska has been named the winner of the Goethe Medal 2024, presented by the Goethe Institute. It is regarded as Germany’s official honorary recognition and the highest award of the foreign cultural policy.

In addition to Geshoska, other awardees include literary translator and interpreter Claudia Cabrera from Mexico, and Carmen Romero Quero, the founder and director of the theatre festival Teatro a Mil, from Chile.

 “Iskra Geshoska has been promoting self-confidence and European networking of the young art scene in North Macedonia through the non-governmental organization she founded, as well as through numerous festivals,” says Carola Lentz, President of the Goethe Institute, in a press release. 

The Goethe Institute has been presenting the Goethe Medal annually since 1955. Candidates are nominated by the Goethe Institute around the world in coordination with the German embassies. The committee tasked with awarding the Goethe Medal, made up of people working in the field of science, culture and arts, makes a shortlist from these nominations, which is later confirmed by the Goethe Institute’s executive board. Through the Goethe Medal winners, the German public gets acquainted with global relevant cultural topics all the while supporting the internationalization of the German cultural landscape. 

The award will be presented at a ceremony on August 28, the birthday of Goethe in Weimar. A total of 380 people from 70 countries have received the award since 1955.
