Another four-hour blockade at Evzoni, border to be kept open over next two days

Another four-hour blockade at Evzoni, border to be kept open over next two days

Athens, 5 January 2025 (MIA) – The Evzoni border crossing with North Macedonia will be closed for all vehicles to enter and exit Greece from 6 pm to 10 pm Macedonian time, as Greek farmers continue their protests on Monday, MIA’s Athens correspondent reports. The border will be kept open on Tuesday and Wednesday during the Epiphany holiday in Greece.

The farmers, who have been blocking the border since December 1 with their tractors, have announced another four-hour blockade on Monday for all vehicles.

Roads and borders will be open on Tuesday and Wednesday to facilitate the movement of people travelling for the Epiphany holiday in Greece.

During a nationwide meeting on Sunday, the farmers decided to stage a 48-hour blackout on Thursday and Friday, i.e. block the entire national road network, secondary roads and key road routes in Greece, as well as border crossings.

Protesting farmers at the Evzoni border crossing will participate in the 48-hour blockade, but plan to hold a meeting on Wednesday to decide on the type of blockade, i.e. whether the border crossing will be closed for two days only to trucks or to all vehicles.

Farmers in Greece started protesting on November 30 due to rising production costs and low sale prices of their products. They also demand payment of overdue subsidies.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has convened an emergency meeting earlier on Monday over the farmers' protests.
