Ambassadors Geer and Drexler hope for continued dialogue with new government

Skopje, 5 July 2024 (MIA) - European Union Ambassador David Geer and German Ambassador Petra Drexler said Friday they hope for continued dialogue with the new Government in response to the statement of Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski that foreign ambassadors interfere in domestic affairs.

After some ambassadors had remarks on the Government's announcement for dissolution of the Judicial Council and the Council of Public Prosecutors, PM Mickoski said yesterday it has become a practice that ambassadors interfere in the country's domestic affairs while adding that he was open to better solutions.

EU Ambassador Geer said PM Mickoski has raised important issues regarding the need for rule of law reforms.

"This is crucial for the country's European path and we will continue to engage with the PM and the Government in reviewing the best ways to move forward. We hope for constructive dialogue, we share the same goal - to bring the country into the EU as soon as possible," Geer told reporters.

He saluted the fact that the new Government is building on what the previous authorities had started - support for NATO, alignment with the EU common foreign and security policy, and continued support for Ukraine.

German Ambassador Drexler noted they would continue to engaged in dialogue with the new Government.

"We will continue to engage in dialogue with the new Government and I believe both sides will find this valuable. We have an exchange of issues in the rule of law field, which is part of the EU accession process. The Fundamentals cluster is very important and we hope dialogue will continue," said Drexler.
