Alternativa to decide whether to join ruling coalition

Alternativa to decide whether to join ruling coalition
Skopje, 26 November 2021 (MIA) — The central presidency of Alternativa at a session this evening will decide whether the party will join the Government and the parliamentary majority or remain in opposition. According to some of the party’s Members of Parliament, if Alternativa decides to become part of the ruling coalition, the party should prioritize the implementation of its political agenda over its members’ future positions in government. The party leader Afrim Gashi in an interview for Belgrade’s Politika daily said Alternativa’s decision would be guided by its voters’ expectations, the interests of North Macedonia’s Albanian community, and the interest of the state. “If we see in the negotiations with Zoran Zaev that he sincerely wants to save the country from this gridlock, we’ll try to help him,” Gashi said. "We are deeply interested in continuing the country's Euro-Atlantic course, opening EU membership talks, resolving the dispute with Bulgaria, and political and economic stability," he pointed out. Last week, Gashi met with SDSM leader and Prime Minister Zaev, who proposed that Alternativa — which has four parliament seats — join the government coalition and increase the ruling majority in Parliament. Alternativa’s Members of Parliament were among the signatories of the no-confidence motion against the government, but after Kastriot Rexhepi from Besa did not come to the parliamentary session during which the confidence vote was to be held, the attempt by the opposition to topple the government failed. Now, Zaev is trying to increase the parliamentary majority from 61 MPs to 65, which would strengthen the ruling coalition’s positions and ensure a stable government. mr/
