All secondary students in N.Macedonia study foreign languages, fluency not guaranteed: analysis

Skopje, 30 October 2023 (MIA) - North Macedonia is among the top five countries in Europe where a 100 percent of secondary school students study foreign languages, according to an analysis by Landgeist based on Eurostat data. In addition to North Macedonia, Lichtenstein, Malta, Romania and Sweden are also in the top five countries where all secondary students study a foreign language.

The education system is one of the reasons so many people in Europe can speak a foreign language. Three quarters of all secondary students in the countries study one or more modern foreign language. Although this doesn’t guarantee that these students will end up being able to speak the languages taught, it does provide them with the tools to acquire that knowledge.

The lowest shares of secondary school students that study a foreign language can be found in Denmark (76%) and Iceland (80.2%). Two countries that are known for having a population that can speak English very well.

In Bulgaria, 98.8 percent of secondary school students study foreign languages, 98.6 percent in Slovenia, 95.3 percent in Greece, and 87.8 percent in Germany.
