Alex Salmond, Scotland's ex-first minister, dies in Ohrid

Ohrid, 12 October 2024 (MIA) – Alex Salmond, former first minister of Scotland, died Saturday in Ohrid, where he took part in the second Forum for Cultural Diplomacy, former President Gjorge Ivanov’s office said.

“Unfortunately, Alex Salmond, former first minister of Scotland, one of the panellists in yesterday’s forum for cultural diplomacy, held in Ohrid, died suddenly today,” Ivanov’s office said in a press release Saturday.

Ex-President Ivanov expressed condolences to Salmond’s family.

In his honor, a commemoration took place Saturday evening, which saw addresses by several forum participants, including Gjorge Ivanov and Miguel Ángel Moratinos, United Nations Under-Secretary-General. President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova was also in attendance.

Salmond delivered address on Friday at the second Forum for Cultural Diplomacy, co-organized by the former President Gjorge Ivanov’s office, the Alliance for Civilizations International Center and the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin. 

Salmond served as first minister of Scotland from 2007 until 2014.
