Aggeler: Campaign discourse to focus on essential issues, not personal attacks

Skopje, 27 February 2024 (MIA) – The Ambassador of the United States to North Macedonia, Angela Aggeler, said Tuesday she hopes that the election campaign discourse will focus on essential issues and not personal attacks. She said candidates from the entire political spectrum should remember that the elections are for the citizens, as well as for the future of the country.

“If I could give one recommendation to the candidates from across the political spectrum, it would be to remember that these elections, as well as all other elections, are for the citizens of this country. They are for the future that this country and its people hope for and deserve. That’s why, I hope that the campaign discourse will focus on essential issues, and not personal attacks, because I believe that people are tired from negativity,” Aggeler told PRESSonline.al.

Only then, according to the Ambassador, will voters be able to choose the candidates they believe would best help them fulfill their hopes and dreams for themselves, for their children and society.

Aggeler said she hopes the decisions will bring the country closer to complete integration with the European community. She also underscored the importance of government institutions establishing the necessary processes for free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections.

“Voters must be informed through secure sources of information, they must recognize and dismiss all disinformation and manipulation. And, most importantly, the voters must vote. Democracy functions when we all fulfill our obligation. My expectations for the elections are the same as those of the voters, and that’s for the entire process, from the campaign period and to the establishment of the future government, to unfold in a transparent manner, ensuring free and fair elections,” underlined Aggeler.
