A5 StratCom Conference: Media literacy strengthens democratic resilience of society to malign influences

Skopje, 19 May 2023 (MIA) - Media literacy strengthens the democratic resilience of society to malign influences, stressed participants at Friday's Conference on Strategic Communications "Media Literacy and Disinformation - Readiness of Institutions for Protection from Hybrid Influences" organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in cooperation with the U.S. Embassy in North Macedonia as part of the country's U.S.-Adriatic Charter presidency.

MFA State Secretary Filip Tosevski and U.S. Embassy Skopje Acting Public Affairs Officer Augusta Philbin opened the conference with the attendance of U.S. expert Andy Carvin, as well as many local experts, representatives of A5 member and observer states, media organizations and civil society, who participated in the three thematic sessions of the conference exchanging views and best practices in dealing with hybrid threats and disinformation, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release. 

 

"The conference underscored the importance of media literacy as one of the tools that contribute through the educational system towards building a society of citizens with critical thinking skills, able to analyze and differentiate information content, and thus strengthen the democratic resilience of society to malign influences," reads the press release.  

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it adds, will continue activities to raise awareness of the threats, expressing readiness to deal with all the challenges arising from hybrid threats.

 

North Macedonia assumed the U.S.-Adriatic Charter presidency in January 2023, the year marking the 20th anniversary of the initiative.
