US has almost achieved its main objectives in Iran, Trump says

Washington, 2 April 2026 (dpa/MIA) - President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that the United States has almost achieved its main objectives in the war with Iran.

"Our objectives are very simple and clear," Trump said in an address to the nation from the White House. "We are systematically dismantling the regime's ability to threaten America or project power outside of their borders."

Trump continued: "Their navy is gone, their air force is gone. Their missiles are just about used up or beaten. Taken together, these actions will cripple Iran military [sic], crush their ability to support terrorist proxies, and deny them the ability to build a nuclear bomb."

The president went on to say that the US is "on track" to achieve all of its military objectives "very shortly."

"We are going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks. We're going to bring them back to the stone ages [sic] where they belong. In the meantime, discussions are ongoing," he said.

Since starting the conflict at the end of February, the US has made various statements regarding its war aims. Critics have accused Trump of lacking a clear plan and of pursuing an erratic course.

Among the objectives cited by the Trump administration are the destruction of Iran's air force, navy and missile arsenal.

Trump claimed, in some instances shortly after the war began, that these objectives had almost been achieved. Iran rejects this. Tehran has also long maintained that its nuclear programme is not aimed at developing nuclear weapons.

Since the war began more than a month ago, the US president has also stated on several occasions that the war was almost over – yet he has recently continued to expand the US military presence in the region.
