Skopje, 26 December 2024 (MIA) - The government's 'New Year's Basket' market intervention has indeed resulted in grocery stores reducing prices of some foods by 10 percent; some storekeepers have reduced prices of about 30 products (milk and dairy products, meat and meat products, oil and eggs) up to 20 percent, the State Market Inspectorate said Thursday following a series of inspections carried out Wednesday.

"Price monitoring is carried out on products that are part of the ‘New Year Basket’, but additionally on certain basic food products that are not part of the basket," the release said.

Prices of basic food products increased in November, but they dropped again at the start of the 'New Year Basket' intervention.

Small grocery stores generally adhered to the market intervention, the release said, adding that minor irregularities the inspectors discovered were quickly addressed and corrected.

"Monitoring of suppliers and manufacturers or wholesalers is currently under way, and after that is done we will inform the public of the established factual situation," the SMI said. ssh/mr
